Photoshop Photo Effects – Photo Edge Burn Effect
March 31st, 2010What is Edge Burning?
In traditional darkroom printing, especially in black and white, the enlarger systems used often suffered from ‘fall off’ (the light in the centre of an image was brighter than at the edges hence the centre of the print always had a lighter area around it.) The same is true of cameras; the camera image is brighter in the centre than at the edges. This is most evident with really wide-angle lenses but is present to some extent for all lenses.
This is commonly called ‘fall off’ and if you want to get really technical it can be calculated using the Cos4θ rule of trigonometry but I digress. As a rule of thumb, most lenses lose about 1/3 to 1/2 a stop of light at the edges of the image compared to the centre.
So, to compensate for negatives and enlarger problems of fall off, most expert printers use edge burning to balance the tonal difference between the centre and edge of the print. Edge burning is simply adding more tone to the edges of the image. In printing it was usual to add about 10% additional exposure time for each of the edges.
Edge Burn and Composition
Now, edge burning has another important effect and that is to do with visual perception and not deficiencies in photography. When you darken the edges of an image it holds the viewers attention into the picture and prevents the eye straying beyond the boundaries of the print or image. This is a subtle technique for concentrating attention inside the image borders.
Inner Glow to Edge Burn in one easy lesson.
One day it dawned on me that the ‘inner glow’ layer effect in Photoshop produces an ‘edge lightening’ around the four sides of an image and although this is the exact opposite of the desired edge burn, it got my brain cells sparking so I dove into the Inner Glow dialog to see what gives.
My easy Photoshop edge burn effect just needs you to change the settings for the Color, the Blend mode, and usually the Size values in the Inner Glow dialog and there you have an edge burn. Change the colour to black, the Blend Mode to Multiply, and the Size value for the width of edge burn you want.
The Opacity value can be modified down to around 5-15% depending on how obvious or subtle you want the effect to be. Sometimes I use higher values to make the edge burn very obvious and then it becomes part of the image composition and mood.
You can only apply the layer effect to a real layer (not the background so convert it to a layer) and sometimes you will need to add a new layer filled with white and blend mode set to ‘Multiply’ at the top of the stack to add the effect to for the best results.
There you have a very easy and controllable method of quickly adding edge burn to an image. Please note, although there is a Photoshop layer effect called ‘Inner Shadow’ which you may think does the edge burning job; it doesn’t! This is because the Inner Shadow effect only applies the effect to two sides of the image to create a shadow and not an edge burn on all four sides.
Photoshop’s Tools Improve Website’s Look and Feel
March 31st, 2010Playing with Photoshop needs skills and learning of this program. Here the web designer can create images that do not happen nor would take place in real. This program is not so easy to learn and cannot be learned in one overnight. Constant practice and learning goes into creating images using Photoshop. Years might have to be devoted to learn this skill.
Photoshop is used online, and can be regarded as canvases were you can paint your creation using software tools. It gives an opportunity to express the point creatively and freedom to do anything with virtual images according to your skills and imagination.
The Photoshop artist can develop the image in whatever form they want and present it in the way they want to the world. The format of presentation can also be altered for the same image itself, making it look different on diverse mediums. Imagination knows no limits in Photoshop, the artist can apply their own style and use options available accordingly.
For graphic design and editing purpose ‘Adobe Photoshop‘ program is used enabling the users to make desired changes in images. This program can generate layers of images and also put these layers collectively. Flash designers put layers on already present images or add design elements to it.
Unlike other digital imaging applications this program has many add-ons and plug-ins plus additional tools for creation and editing of the images. One can draw, fill-in the colors, cut, paste, add special effects, etc in the images with Adobe Photoshop.
Realizing benefits of Photoshop more and more website designers are learning it and using it in website designing. The plug-ins and add-ons can be downloaded from various online sources that are accessed free of cost. Make it sure that the add-on features that is being downloaded is well-matched with the existing Photoshop program you have.
Some additional functionalities of Photoshop are scripts, layers, gradients, textures, actions, frames, patterns, etc. When photo of a subject is taken due to light reflection red-eye effect is seen. Photoshop can remove this effect from the image that is being taken. Red-eye effect is very common when you take picture of any person in darkness.
Andromeda software have developed program for removal of red-eye effect through the plug-ins without disturbing the original color of the eye. The changes done by it are so smooth that it does not show any trace of eye been retouched.

Easily Change The Appearance Of Any Photo In Photoshop
March 30th, 2010With Adobe Photoshop you can apply all kinds of cool special effects and transform the appearance of photographs.
The following are just a few of the special effects you can do in Photoshop.
Black and White
Everyone loves black and white photography. In the past you had to use separate film if you wanted black and white images. In digital photography all images are typically photographed in color and the converted to black and white on the computer. This means that you can experiment by turning your photos to black and white.
Sepia Tone
Transform your photos into works of art using sepia coloring.
Color/Black and White Mix
Mixing black and white with color has become a popular effect among wedding and artistic photographers. Typically, most of the image will be black and white while only certain objects in the image are in color. This can create a striking effect. You can easily learn this technique in Photoshop and amaze your family and friends with your photo creations.
Drop Shadows
This is an excellent effect to use on text, logos, and graphic art.
Watermark
It is easy with Photoshop to create a custom watermark on your photos.
Soft Focus
Soft focus is a popular effect used by professional photographers for years to enhance portraiture.
Blur the Background
Pictures of people and other objects will really stand out when the background is blurry. Photoshop allows you to only blur certain areas of the image while leaving other areas in perfect focus.
Frame
There are unlimited ways you can put frames around your photos in Photoshop.
Vignette
Vignette is a popular effect that involves a soft fade, usually in oval shape, where the photograph is light in center and fades gradually into the background where it gets darker.
Vibrant Color
By adjusting the saturation you can turn an otherwise dull photograph into a masterpiece of vibrant color. You can even work with particular color channels while leaving others alone.
As you learn Photoshop and start experimenting with adding special effects to your photos you will learn many more techniques as well as different ways to achieve the same effects.
Cropping For Perfect Composition In Photoshop
March 30th, 2010There are many things that make a great photograph but one of the most important elements of a good photo is composition. Composition has to do with the placement of the subject and objects in a photograph and how these various elements interact together.
Good composition is really what sets apart really good photographers from mediocre ones. Now while there are many aspects of good composition, framing or cropping of an image is an important part.
Photoshop makes it easy to improve the composition of a photograph if you become familiar with the cropping tool. You can quickly and easily cut out parts of the photo that you don’t want or that distract from the main subject. Photoshop makes cropping as precise as you need it to be by allowing you to measure areas to be cut.
The best part about cropping using Photoshop’s cropping tool is that if you don’t like how your photo looks after it has been cropped you can simply go back to where you started and try again. You can essentially experiment with an unlimited number of possibilities.
The following are some tips for better cropping.
Consider the Rule of Thirds
If you spend much time looking at the work of professional photographers you will notice that they rarely center the subject in the picture yet amateurs almost always center their subject. By moving your subject off center you can create a much more profession and eye pleasing image. Imagine lines across your image breaking it up it thirds and then consider cropping your picture so that the subject is in one of the outer thirds. Don’t be afraid to experiment but before you do make sure you make a copy of the original image and save it in a separate folder.
Crop to Traditional Print Sizes
When cropping your pictures check the sizing to make sure they will print in a standard size such as 4×6. If they do not correspond to these sizes try cutting a little more off. Otherwise when you take them into print at the local lab the photo lab may have to crop them even more to make them print the right size.
Photoshop makes it so easy to crop your photos that you really won’t have to worry about the framing when you take the picture on your camera because you can just fix it later on your computer. Regardless of whether you use Photoshop Elements or the more advanced version, Photoshop CS, the technical aspects of using the cropping tool are essentially the same.
Learn Photoshop Now – Photoshop Black and White
March 30th, 2010Photoshop Black and White Photography has always been powerful and it has stood the test of time, even against its contemporary color counterpart. When working with black and white, you must incorporate a different set of rules and techniques. With the lack of color the balances of shape and contrast are made to work harder in order to convey the story or set the mood. However, once this is achieved it is striking.
Many digital cameras come equipped with a black and white mode. If yours does not, you can still achieve the black and white look through editing techniques. Photoshop has made this process possible with a vast selection of methods to convert a color photograph into what Photoshop refers to a grayscale, or to us, black and white. Most photographers would agree that it is actually easier while behind the lens to shoot in color and to convert to black and white at another step. The level in control of effects throughout the Photoshop program are much greater than what could be achieved through the actual shot.
The simplest way of changing color to black and white is to switch the mode to grayscale (Image > Mode > Grayscale). While this can work, there are other methods to use. Lets take a look at three other alternatives that will convert color to grayscale (black and white):
Method #1 – Desaturation
The first method is desaturation. This is the removal the visible color information while keeping the RGB status of the file. This would allow you to add a tint at a later point without having to change color mode again. Follow Steps: Image > Adjustments > Desaturate (or press Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + U).
One negative outcome of desaturation is potentially a flat, uninspiring ’shell’ of the original picture. This can be improved on however by looking at the picture in parts. You can increase textures in one area by darkening the shadows and midtones, or increase contrast in another to remove haziness. To do this, take a feathered section to work with and press Ctrl/Cmd + J to copy and paste the selection to a new layer. Add a ‘Levels Adjustment Layer’ to it, combining the two layers as a clipping mask. Drag the Black and Gray point markers toward the right to bring out texture or to the left to decrease. If you see a dividing line ater making the Levels adjustment, remove by adding a layer mask to the newly made level (set to Reveal All) and paint on the mask in black until the edge disappears using a soft brush at a low opacity setting.
While a Levels adjustment layer would add contrast, a different method would be: Follow Steps: Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves This will add a Curves adjustment layer to the background layer. Apply the curve shown to increase midtone contrast, but at slight decrease to the highlights and shadows, however this lessens the haziness effect.
Method #2 – Single Channels
This method builds from the idea of the use of color filters from the actual photography process, by allowing the same changes in the editing phase.
Imagine a photo of the blue ocean. Going to the Layers palette, click the Channels tab and click on the Red channel. The image seen be the darkening of the blue-tinted areas the same result that a red filter over the lens would have created. For a comparison, click on the Green channel for a result similar to the Red channel but less drastic. Finally, the Blue channel, it will be lighter, since most of the image is blue. Without changing anything, you have three different ready-made black-and-white effects.
After choosing the filter effect you desire, use this keyboard shortcut sequence to make it into a new document: Ctrl/Cmd + A (selects all) Ctrl/Cmd + C (copies the selection to the clipboard) Ctrl/Cmd + N (creates a new document of the same proportions as whatever we have on the clipboard. The document will also be a grayscale as we only have one channel selected) Enter/Return (to confirm the settings. No changes are necessary) Ctrl/Cmd + V (to paste the contents of the clipboard to a new layer) You can then use Levels and Curves to fine-tune the result.
Method #3 – Calculation
Use this method if the automatic setting of the channels are not what you are looking for in order to increase the range of tones or strengthen the color effects.
Choose the channel you desire and keep it active and go to Image > Calculations. If the Red channel was active, the Red channel will appear in the Calculations dialog box. Source 1 and 2 are set to the same document, layer, and Red channel, which means they will all be combined for the calculation to take place. Set the blending drop-down to Multiply, working in the same way as the normal layer blend methods. Multiply will darken the image, but based on the red channel. As a result blue elements or elements with a blue cast will become darker than other elements. Set the Result drop-down box to New Document to create a new multichannel file based on the calculated result.
Combine Red and Green Channels to achieve a slightly less pronounced result, using the Multiply blend mode. The difference is subtle, but it shows the fine control you have in this technique.
Along with the idea of mixing and calculating channel values, another option called Channel Mixer. This allows the mixing of values of each of the channels, allowing a wide range of combinations. To do this make sure the RGB composite channel is active, and go to Image > Adjustments > Channel Mixer. Enable the Monochrome checkbox. If you change the percentage values for each of the Red, Green, and Blue channels, it will dramatically effect the image.

New Learning Photoshop Techniques Revealed
March 30th, 2010Ghosting is perfect for pictures involving subjects in motion, taken when the camera and the background is stable (not moving) and the subjects move through, around, or across the frame. I have had great success using this effect when photographing people moving about an historic site or children as they scamper over rocks. I have also used this effect for weddings and sports shoots. Example: In one wedding photograph, the groom stood still at the bottom of stone steps to an historic dwelling, his hand extended towards his bride, who slowly moved down the steps toward her groom. My six deliberate ‘clicks’ of the shutter created an airy, surreal picture of the wedding couple. Depending on the speed of the moving subjects, the shutter can be held down in rapid fire mode or each exposure can be meticulously choreographed: 1) each subject deliberately positioned in the frame, 2) one ‘click’ of the shutter, and 3) repeat steps 1 and 2 to the total number of multiple exposures you set in your camera.
There are several advantages of using any of the effects for the edges on real images. One is that it reduces interference between steps or detail and the halos from other, nearby steps. Another thing, the light or dark halos make other features of the image stand out better from the background. Start doing this effect on your images using Photoshop by following several procedures: 1st step is duplicate the layer holding the image; 2nd step – apply the conventional unsharp mask; 3rd step – set the layer blending mode to “Darken” or “Lighten”.
Photoshop Brush Palette is collection of all Brush Shape Presets that allow you to create new brush, load, save or modify brush size, brush shape and brush dynamic in one single palette. The primary advantage of the Brushes palette is that you can define your own brush shapes and adjust various exciting dynamics. Whether you’re using a mouse or a pen and tablet, every tool behaves differently based on the size and shape of your cursor (the brush tip), and brush tips come in many different styles (called brush shapes, or typically just brushes). A big, round brush paints in broad strokes; a small, elliptical brush paints in thin, hairline strokes. Of course, there’s much more going on in Photoshop than just big, small, round, or elliptical.
You may be looking at a photo you took on your last vacation of the crystal blue waters on the ocean, but all Photoshop sees is a gray ocean. Did you manage to snap a picture of a rainbow arching across the sky after a summer evening storm? Photoshop sees it as a beautiful assortment of shades of gray. And that famous pot of gold at the end of it? To Photoshop, it’s a big ol’ pot of gray. Don’t feel sorry for Photoshop though. It’s perfectly happy in its colorless world. In fact, the only reason it shows us our images in color at all is because we as human beings expect to see them in color. We wouldn’t know what to think if everything was appearing in black and white. But not Photoshop. To it, life just couldn’t be sweeter than in black, white and gray.
Creating actions is fun and easy. All you have to have is a bunch of pictures and then record them all together, start by clicking on Record and the button below will turn red. Any action you perform in Photoshop will be recorded. With the Record mode on, start editing your photo. In our case, lets resize the image. Choose Image -> Image Size, enter 450 for width (or any other sizes), click Ok. Click on the record button to turn the Record mode off. Testing the action Now that you have an action recorded, lets open up another image that needs to be resize. This time, we’ll just hit the shortcut key Shift F2, or clicking on the Play selection button. You should be able to resize in just one click. To exercise the usage of Photoshop Actions, you can try recording more complex actions. Mastering actions will help you perform alot of routine Photoshop tasks in shorter time. Have fun.
New features in Photoshop CS2 make it easier to composite images in multiple layers. In earlier versions it was necessary to select a required layer in the Layers palette. But now it’s possible to select multiple layers by using a marquee tool. The Show Transform Controls feature allows objects to be reshaped faster than ever before, and it works across multiple layers. Smart Guides is another innovation that makes it easier to align objects, even if they’re on different layers. People who learn on their own sometimes discover the best way to do things, but usually they discover the wrong way to do things, which causes recurring frustration and limits their ability to go on learning new things. The time and money you invest today in your Photoshop training will reward you in ways that you can’t even begin to imagine.
There is only two things you have too know about the ExtendScript Toolkit program right now: Select target application, ExtendScript must know which application you are writing the script for. In the top left dropdown menu select Adobe Photoshop CS2 and if asked if you want top start it choose yes. Running script, to run a script you have written you press the button that looks like a play button. Reference documents All objects have different properties that can be set and methods that can be executed and right now you probably don’t know any of these, this is where the reference documents come in. The reference document for JavaScript contains information about all objects available in your scripts.
